Lumber firm, founded 1859 by Allen Towle, whose brothers, Edwin W. and George Washington Towle, became his partners; mill operations began at Dutch Flat, in Placer County, Calif., and expanded to several locations in Placer and Nevada counties; eventually the firm also owned lumber yards for retail sales, manufactured pine containers for agricultural products, and founded the town of Towle, which served as its distribution center.
